    What is the PE and sports premium?

    The PE and sport premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils.

    Schools must spend the funding to improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils, but they are free to choose the best of way using of the money. However, the government suggests that school can use funding to:

    • hire specialist PE teachers
    • hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
    • provide existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport
    • support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
    • run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
    • run sports activities with other schools.

    At West Horndon Primary School, we believe that physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and improves concentration, but also promotes correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others. Through sport and other physical activities our children will learn about their responsibilities both as individuals and members of groups and teams. They learn to cooperate and to compete fairly, understanding their own and other’s roles.

    Our aims are that through physical education we teach and develop physical competence, an appreciation of skilled and creative performances, understanding of basic principles of ‘fair play’ and improve inter personal skills. We achieve this by:

    • following a broad and balanced PE curriculum fulfilling the requirements of the National Curriculum;
    • giving every child the opportunity to swim at least 25m;
    • developing the fitness of the individual, by ensuring a good pace in lessons and incorporating fitness activities into physical education lessons as appropriate;
    • integrating, where possible, into other curriculum areas, for example, the use of athletics data in maths & ICT;
    • developing programmes that meet the needs of all the children, providing equal opportunities, making allowances for children with disabilities and medical conditions, taking into account children with special needs, through modified classroom programmes;
    • involving the community where possible, for example, Sports Day, clubs, intra/ inter-school matches, outside coaching personnel and resources.
    • providing enjoyable experiences, where positive attitudes of sensitivity, leadership, co-operation, competition and tolerance may develop.

    Each year we publish how we have spent our allocation. PE & sport premium funding for schools is allocated for each financial year but the information that we publish online refers to academic years because this is how we believe parents best understand the school system. Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer. This means that you should use the Primary PE and Sport Premium to: • develop or add to the PE and sport activities that your school already offers • build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.

    According to the DfE, there are 5 key indicators which schools should expect to demonstrate improvements across. These are as follows:

    Focus 1: The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school.

    Focus 2: The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement

    Focus 3: Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport

    Focus 4: Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils

    Focus 5: Increased participation in competitive sport.
